Action Needed for Wood Smoke Nuisances

HB 6616 AN ACT ESTABLISHING WOOD SMOKE TO BE A PUBLIC NUISANCE is about to be heard by the Environment Committee. Please take a moment to write an email to Committee members asking them to support this important piece of legislation.  This legislation will add the word "wood smoke" to the CT Public Health Nuisance Code so that families who have wood smoke entering their homes on a continual basis will be able to seek relief.

Talking Points

  • Many families in our state being made genuinely sick by smoke entering their homes on a continual basis and presently they have nowhere to turn for help in Connecticut.
  • If a dog barked all day and all night on a continual basis - this state has laws against that disturbance. We do not have to ban all dogs - we simply deal with the issue on a case-by-case basis.
  • We do not presently have that ability in CT to handle wood smoke entering a home on a continual basis.  We do not need to ban anything - we just need to deal with the issue on a case-by-case basis and that is what this Bill will enable local health departments to do.
  • Redefining wood smoke as a public health nuisance allows action to be taken to protect people in their own homes.
